Brisbane is Queenslands capital and its largest city with more than 1.6 million people situated on Yuggera country. A modern city characterised by parks and dominated by the Brisbane River.

Brisbane History


It was settled as a penal colony and was notorious for its harsh treatment of the convicts. Free settlers began to arrive in Brisbane in 1837 although they were not allowed closer than 80 kilometres, 50 miles to the penal area. This set a pattern of a decentralised city that is evident today - Brisbane has several distinct communities as well as the central area.

Gold discoveries in Queensland helped Brisbanes growth and in 1859, Queensland became a self governing colony with Brisbane as the capital. Queenslands other natural resources - coal, silver, lead and zinc - were also developed and Brisbane flourished.

Brisbane Attractions


A leisurely stroll around the wide streets of the small city centre is an ideal way to pass time and see the mixture of old and new buildings.

The Brisbane River winds its way through the city. A river cruise is a very pleasant way to see the city and to get to the many riverside tourist attractions.

Surrounded by some spectacular country, there are a variety of day trips to experience from Brisbane including the Gold Coast, the Gold Coast Hinterland, Mount Glorious, the Sunshine Coast and the offshore islands.

Eating out in Brisbane


Brisbanes fantastic weather and excellent restaurants makes eating out a particularly pleasurable experience. Regional specialties such as Moreton Bay bugs, tiger prawns, mubcrabs, reef fish and barramundi are just some of the delights available to tempt your taste buds.

Brisbane Fishing


The warm tropical currents of the waters around Brisbane provide a mix of temperate fish, such as bream, whiting and flathead and tropical fish species including snapper, sweetlips and reef cod. Estuary, beach, reef and offshore fishing is all possible.

Brisbanes Hinterland


Mt Glorious lies to the northwest of Brisbane in the Brisbane Forest Park, 28 500 hectares of subtropical forests and hills.

Take the Mt Nebo route and you will be rewarded with some spectacular mountain views along the way to the sleepy settlement of Mt Glorious nestled within the dense forests of the mountaintop. Walking tracks on top allow you to fully experience your surrounds.

Stop at Wivenhoe Outlook, a forest platform with magnificent views of Lake Wivenhoe on the upper Brisbane River. Take the alternative route, just as scenic, back to Brisbane via Samford.
