Cairns Australia


Cairns is a bustling tropical city because of its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest region of the Atherton Tablelands and the exquisite palm-lined beaches to the north and south of the city. Cairns itself, population around 93 000, is located on coastal mudflats that attract an abundance of native bird-life that thrive in this environment.

Cairns History


Founded in 1876 as the port for inland goldfields it was actually the tin and timber resources of the Atherton Tablelands that really established Cairns.


Cairns Today


Today, a myriad of tropical plants and trees, parks and gardens blend with the people who walk among the towns varying architecture to get to their next destination.

In fact, one of the most convenient elements to Cairns is how close and accessible everything is.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities in Cairns city shops, duty free stores and markets as well as large shopping centres in the suburbs nearby.

Cairns Coastline


Visiting cruise liners and yachts moor at the marina and wharves that are only a block from the main city centre.

Marlin Jetty is a top spot to watch big-game anglers return with their days catch during the game-fishing season from August to December.

A barbecue or picnic on the Esplanade is a good way to escape the bustle. Sit under a shady tree or walk along the grass but keep your eye on the mudflats where you can spot a variety of migratory waders at any time of the year.

Excellent swimming beaches can be found just north of the city.

Cairns Botanic Gardens


Less than 3 kilometres, 1.8 miles from Cairns city centre is a historic botanic garden. The garden features more than 100 species of palm trees and many other tropical plants including a rainforest section complete with native birdlife.

Much of the holiday accommodation in Cairns is close to shops, restaurants, theatres, galleries, nightclubs and the two exciting new venues - the glass-domed Reef Hotel Casino and the 2,400 seat Cairns Convention Centre.

Tjapukai Aboriginal Centre


Not to be missed is the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre found at the base of the spectacular skyrail. The Djabugay people will share with you some of their own history and culture. Tjapukai Dance Theatre performances are exhilarating.

Many tours are available from Cairns that bring the Tjapukai experience together with a journey into the rainforest by train or skyrail and time at the rainforest village of Kuranda.
