The Whitsunday group of islands lie northeast of Mackay, in the dazzling sapphire waters that are teeming with mackerel, queenfish, trevally and other species. The islands are remnants of a coastal range, which was submerged when sea levels rose at the end of the ice age and now form the largest offshore island chain on the Australian east coast.
Originally named the Cumberland and Northumberland Island groups by Captain James Cook these islands have become well known as the Whitsunday Islands probably due to Captain Cooks naming of this area as the Whitsunday Passage.

Most of the islands have National Park status, while a 35 000 square kilometre, 21 000 square mile marine park stretches from around Sarina in the south to Cape Upstart to the north.

Accessing the Whitsunday Islands


Varying air and sea access to the main islands of the Whitsundays is available from, Mackay, Proserpine, Shute Harbour, Able Point Marina, Airlie Beach. There are direct flights to Hamilton Island from Sydney and Brisbane. The classy resorts on Hayman, Hamilton and Lindeman Islands are accustomed to guests arriving by private helicopter.

Whitsunday Resort Islands


Daydream, Hayman, Hook, South Mole, Whitsunday, Hamilton, Lindeman, Long and Brampton Islands are the most renowned mostly because they host resorts.

South Mole, Daydream and Long Islands are fantastic for families.
