Day 1 – Fly to Alice Springs

Fly to Alice Springs today. You will be personally met at the airport by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the airport to your hotel.

Day 2 – Alice Springs Coach Tour

Your Central Australian adventure starts off today by exploring the modern face of the historic pioneer town of Alice Springs, famous for Afghan cameleers, gold-diggers, flying doctor base, school of the air, The Ghan train, the usually dry Todd River, the Simpson Desert, 'A Town Like Alice', contemporary Aboriginal art (Todd Mall) and the Aboriginal Arrernte people who have lived here for 20,000 years.

Enjoy our 4.5 hour luxury coach tour with great informative commentary from our experienced local guide. Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service (headquarters of the globally respected medical service providing a critical link to remote communities throughout the Northern Territory), Historic Telegraph Station (site of the first European settlement in Alice Springs, established in 1872 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide), School of the Air (provides education to primary school aged children living on remote properties throughout the Northern Territory since 1951), Anzac Hill (dedicated as a war memorial to honour those that fallen in Australian's wars) and Alice Springs Reptile Centre (amazing NT animals like, saltwater crocodiles, huge goannas, frill-neck lizards and Gecko Cave). You will also get a great orientation of thriving Alice Springs, touring through the town and seeing the other main attractions such as the Cultural Precinct, National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame, Road Transport Hall of Fame, Old Ghan Train Museum, Olive Pink Botanic Gardens and Todd Mall.

Day 3 – Tour from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock via Kata Tjuta

Kata Tjuta ( The Olgas) are a striking group of giant dome shaped rocks lying approximately 35 km west of Uluru in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta national Park, the tallest rock Mt Olga is some 200m higher than Uluru and many visitors find these incredible ochre domes more interesting and captivating than their more illustrious neighbour.

Stop at a camel farm on your journey south from Alice Springs, view Atila (Mt. Conner), visit Kata Tjuta and explore the domes at Walpa Gorge before reaching the Uluru sunset viewing area. Enjoy dinner at an exclusive venue at Ayers Rock.

Day 4 – Tour Ayers Rock and Surrounds

The majestic ochre monolith of Uluru is one of Australia's most recognisable and iconic natural features, this giant rock formation is steeped in indigenous culture, history and heritage and is sacred to the Aboriginal people, standing some 348 metres high it's both an impressive and unforgettable sight, a true wonder of the natural world.

Experience the sunrise at Uluru and a drive around the base of Uluru. Discover the Mutitjulu Waterhole, visit the Uluru – Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre and explore the Valley of the Winds.

Day 5 – Travel from Ayers Rock to Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon lies approximately midway between Alice Springs and Uluru in Australia's vast Red Centre, this ancient ochre rock formation towers above thick palm forests that are home to an incredible and diverse array of plants and animals, a climb to the top of the canyon rewards with sensational views of the gorge and surrounding landscape.

Enjoy some free time at Ayers Rock before travelling Kings Canyon.

Day 6 – Explore Kings Canyon and Tour to Alice Springs

Kings Canyon lies in Australia's vast Red Centre approximately half-way between Uluru and Alice Springs, this majestic red rock formation rises above a thick forest of palm trees which contains a wealth of diverse animal and plant life, to appreciate the true majesty and beauty of the canyon see it from above on a scenic helicopter flight.

Climb to the rim of Kings Canyon or take a shorter walk along the canyon creek bed, travel back to Kings Canyon Resort for lunch then make your way back to Alice Springs.

Day 7 – West MacDonnells

Today explore the iconic West MacDonnell Ranges that form the dramatic ochre red back-drop to Alice Springs, including Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek, Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge. This amazing Central Australia geological feature has many hidden treasures for you to discover.

Travel west on Larapinta Drive, passing the John Flynn Memorial (foot of the Mt Gillen), see what remains of the twin ghost gums (famous painting by Albert Namatjira), stop at Standley Chasm (amazing red cleft that glows) for a delicious morning tea, perhaps walk into the Chasm (Angkerle Creek bed). Stop at Ellery Creek Big Hole (optional short walk to the cool waterhole), visit the Orchre Pits and Glen Helen Gorge (semi permanent waterhole) before your scrumptious lunch (with beer, wine or soft drink). Experience Ormiston Gorge and waterhole, with time to enjoy the refreshing waterhole (perhaps have a well deserved swim). Visit Simpsons Gap. All the time spotting for the amazing wildlife such as eagles, kytes and falcons (soaring above the range on warm currents) as well as black footed Rock Wallabies and desert lizards.

Day 8 – Palm Valley

Palm Valley is well named. The contrast of the magnificent green palm trees against the red ochre earth and blue sky is a sight to be seen. The desert oasis of Palm Valley is the only place in Central Australia where livistona palms survive from the red centre's tropical past.

Today we take a luxury 4WD vehicle to the heart of the outback on an adventure to discover this amazing area. We head west on Larapinta Drive out of Alice Springs, travel alongside the ochre coloured West MacDonnells, cross vast open outback plains on Namatjira Drive, into the Aboriginal homelands of the beautiful Arrernte people and then stop to visit Hermannsburg (an 1870's Lutheran mission). Wander through historic buildings, the Hermannsburg Museum and Art Gallery and learn the reality of Aboriginal history in this region. Enjoy morning tea at Hermannsburg. Head off-road and onto the dry bed of the Finke River, follow the riverbed to Finke Gorge National Park, 4WD further into the gorge to Palm Valley, walk on the dry river bed with its amazing livistona palms and cycads (palm and fern like plants that are either all male or all female), walk along the valley rim with stunning views over Palm Valley, at Kalarranga Lookout experience amazing views over the Amphitheatre and Finke Valley. Enjoy a delicious ploughman's lunch in these spectacular surroundings. Witness the changing colours of the West MacDonnells in the afternoon light. Head back into Alice Springs onboard your luxury 4WD (four wheel drive) coach. Walks are optional (but included in the cost) - hats, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes and bottled water are required when participating.
