DAYS 1–3 Ghan Adelaide to Alice Springs to Darwin

Fly into Adelaide and be personally met at the airport by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the airport to the Ghan railway station to begin your journey to Darwin.

Take a magical journey through the heart of the continent, for three days you'll be transfixed by the sheer beauty of Australia's ever changing landscape, the green rolling hills of Australia's fertile south, the vibrant ochre earth and cobalt skies of Australia's red-centre and the balmy tropical grandeur of Northern Territory's capital Darwin.

DAY 4 Darwin City Tour and Sunset Dinner Cruise

Enjoy a leisurely start to your day today before your fascinating 4 hour guided tour of Darwin's rich culture and history.

Your friendly local driver will pick you up in the comfortable air-conditioned coach before sharing experiences, fascinating facts and enchanting stories in the on-board full commentary. DAY 5 Kakadu National Park

World Heritage-listed Kakadu is internationally famous for very good reason. Experience Australia's biggest national park - with its dramatic escarpments, tropical rainforest, lush wetlands, millions of migratory birds, thundering waterfalls, sparkling waterholes, delicate waterlilies, prehistoric crocodiles, rock art galleries (up to 50,000 years old) and traditional aboriginal owners, the happy and proud Bininj/Mungguy people. Kakadu is a tapestry of treasures waiting to be explored with six (6) dramatically different seasons.

This morning skirt Francis Bay on Darwin Harbour, head out on Tiger Brennan Drive and see Berrimah Naval Defence base, Darwin suburb of Palmerston, spot for massive road-trains, head east on the Arnhem Highway, pass through Humpty Doo, cross the Marrakai Wetlands and Adelaide River. See the top end outback bush, eucalypts, palms and termite mounds. At Kakadu National Park on the South Alligator River, take a short guided walk to Nourlangie Rock to see ancient Aboriginal rock art (optional but included in the price), enjoy a tropical buffet lunch (cold meats, salad and fruit), take a 1.5 hour guided cruise on Yellow Water Billabong, spotting for crocodiles, brolgas, magpie geese and kites. Take in the serenity and beauty that nature gifts in the Kakadu wetlands and visit Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre to learn the stories and traditional ways of the beautiful Aboriginal people of Kakadu. Head back into Darwin after a full day of discovery and wonderful experiences to treasure. DAY 6 Depart Darwin

The state of the art Coral Expeditions vessel takes you on an unforgettable journey of exploration in one of the world's most remote and beautiful locations, the sensational Kimberley coast is home to towering, misty waterfalls, rugged outback landscapes, majestic rivers, incredible Aboriginal art, and the stunning natural phenomenon the Horizontal Falls.

Board the vessel and meet your fellow travellers before the Captain’s Welcome Drinks.

Board the vessel at 08:00AM and depart Darwin at 09:00AM. Cross Cambridge Gulf and join the Expedition Staff for an informative presentation on the Kimberley before meeting your fellow travellers at the Captain’s Welcome Drinks.

DAY 7 King George River and Falls

Explore King George River and Tranquil Bay before getting back on board and sailing to Jar Island.

Discover King George River, the first of the Kimberley’s “Big” rivers. Board the specially designed excursion vessel the “Xplorer” to discover the scenic gorges and cruise close to the base of King George Falls. Later explore Tranquil Bay before returning to the vessel.

DAY 8 Vansittart Bay DC3 and Jar Island

Jar Island in Vansittart Bay in the Kimberley region of WA is a magnet for visitors all eager to catch sight of the wealth of fabulous Bradshaw paintings that are etched into cave walls and alcoves of the island, these ancient rock art sites date back thousands of years and offer a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the Aboriginal people.

Today, visit Vanisttart Bay and later visit jar Island to view the incredible rock paintings of the island.

Walk across the salt flats of Vanisttart Bay with your Expedition Leader to see the wreckage of the US Air Force DC3 which crash landed here during World War II. Later, visit Jar Island and learn about the mysterious Bradshaw Paintings (Gwion) from your guest lecturers.

DAY 9 Hathaway’s Hideaway and Mitchell Falls

This stunning four tiered waterfall majestically cascades over layers of red rock and into a deep pool, the rugged beauty of the Mitchell falls makes them one of the most photographed features of the vast and beautiful Kimberley, you can explore this magnificent waterfall system created by the Mitchell River as it carves its way through the sandstone margins of the Mitchell Plateau.

Explore Hathaway’s Hideaway and take an optional helicopter flight to Mitchell Falls before enjoying a dinner on the beach at sunset.

Anchor in Winyalken Bay and travel ashore aboard the Xplorer to discover Hathaway’s Hideaway, a maze of sandstone caves. Take an optional helicopter flight over Mitchell Plateau to take in spectacular views of Mitchell Fall. Later enjoy a gourmet Aussie BBQ on the beach while enjoying a spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean.

DAY 10 Bigge Island and Careening Bay

Bigge Island is famous for its amazing Aboriginal rock art paintings, the islands coastal caves are home to both Gwion Gwion (also known as Bradshaw art) and Wandjina art which date back 50000 years and are possibly the oldest images known to man, the Wandjina figures are distinct by their haloes around their heads which represent clouds.

Discover the rock art of Bigge Island and later explore “Careening Bay”.

Encounter the rock art gallery on Bigge Island with your Guest Lecturers and learn about the art forms and the myths that inspired them. Later, explore Careening Bay with your Lecturer before returning to the vessel.

DAY 11 Prince Regent River and King Cascades

Situated in the vast Kimberley, the Prince Regent River region is one of Australia's most remote places, this wonderful wilderness is home to over half the bird and mammal species found in the Kimberley and is where you'll find the majestic splendour of the Kings Cascade, the roaring water cascading down the terraced rock face is a spectacular Kimberley attraction.

Cruise the Prince Regent River and enjoy lunch at Camp Creek.

Cruise to King Cascades on the Prince Regent River aboard Xplorer. Later enjoy a picnic lunch at Camp Creek and take a dip in the freshwater pools before returning to the vessel.

DAY 12 Montgomery Reef and Doubtful Bay

Montgomery Reef is one of the great natural wonders of the Kimberley coast, an astonishing spectacle, it's Australia's largest inshore reef and consists of sea-grass beds, islets and shallow lagoons, the outgoing tide reveals a stunning array of cascading waterfalls that attract feeding birds, turtles, manta rays, reef sharks and dugongs.

Watch as Montgomery Reef ‘rises’ out of the ocean and later cruise through Doubtful Bay.

Join the Expedition Staff aboard the Xplorer and experience this natural phenomenon up close. Discover the reef’s diverse marine life including turtles, manta rays, reef sharks and dugongs and later, cruise through the gorgeous Doubtful Bay.

DAY 13 Raft Point and Ruby Falls

Raft Point is situated in the Kimberley region of WA, it's renowned for its ancient Aboriginal rock art which depicts images of mythical Wandjina spirits with their distinctive haloes, the scenery is spectacular and is home to a wealth of wildlife including turtles and dugongs, popular activities here include fishing, mud crabbing and birdwatching.

Cruise through Kuri Bay to Raft Point to view Aboriginal roc art and later explore Red Cone Creek and a swim at Ruby Falls.

Cruise through Kuri Bay to the impressive Raft Point and visit a secluded Aboriginal rock art gallery which houses some of the best preserved Wandjina art and Bradshaw Paintings. Later explore Red Cone Creek and maybe take a swim at Ruby Falls.

DAY 14 Horizontal Falls and Buccaneer Archipelago

The Buccaneer Archipelago is remote and beautiful, consisting of 1000 scattered islands and low lying reef complete with secluded bays and shimmering white sand beaches, the islands are virtually uninhabited except for a diverse wealth of animals such as lizards, geckos, skinks and bats, a major attraction is the Horizontal Waterfall at Talbot Bay.

Cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago and experience an exhilarating ride through Horizontal Falls before exploring Silica Beach on Hidden Island.

Cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago to Horizontal Falls, one of the greatest natural wonders in the world. Take a ride aboard the zodiacs through the mighty falls and later explore Silica Beach on Hidden Island and its stunning white sand beaches and crystal blue water.

DAY 15 Lacepede Islands

The beautiful Lacepede Islands lying 120km north-west of Broome are designated an A Class Nature Reserve, these four remote, treeless islands are an important breeding habitat for green turtles and are home to an amazing and diverse array of birdlife including brown and masked boobies, Australian pelicans, silver gulls, sooty oystercatchers and roseate terns.

Cruise to the Lacepede Islands, explore the islands’ lagoons aboard the zodiacs and enjoy a Captain’s Farewell Dinner.

Cruise through Pender Bay and subject to tides visit the Lacepede Islands, one of the most important breeding grounds for Brown Boobies, Roseate Terns and Green Turtles. This evening reflect upon your expedition with your fellow travellers at the Captain’s Farewell Drinks.

DAY 16 Arrive in Broome

Broome lies 2389 km north of Perth, this historic and laid back town is an outback oasis with white sand beaches and shimmering turquoise waters which contrast vividly with the red ochre pindan earth, Broome is the pearling capital of the world and the gateway to the pristine Kimberley coast, sensational Cable Beach is 6 km from the township of Broome.

Arrive in Broome today and disembark the vessel before spending some free exploring the town.

Disembark in Broome at 08:00AM and spend the day exploring Broome township.

DAY 17 Broome Town Tour

The perfect introduction to Broome, your half day tour of the township will take you to all of the major attractions and landmarks, including ancient rocky outcrops and the spectacular coastline. Hear about Broome’s heritage and how it shaped the town. Visit Chinatown, the Japanese Cemetery, Gantheaume Point and Cable Beach.

At the end of the tour, enjoy a Pearling Master’s high tea and a Pearl Luggers Tour. Combining the historical and cultural influences of Broome, you’ll enjoy tea, coffee or a glass of sparkling wine on arrival followed by sweet and savoury treats.

Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated.
